Virtual private network (VPN)

Local area networks (LAN) are an organization’s internal network. For practical reasons, the trend is for these networks to be linked between themselves through the Internet. As we know, data transmitted on the Internet is very vulnerable: it uses public infrastructures and thus it is liable to be intercepted by malevolent individuals.

It is possible to avoid this problem by using private links. This solution, however ideal, entails significant costs and constraints. This is why several organizations are reluctant to use it.

The alternative consists in implementing a VPN, which uses the Internet to transmit encrypted data. This way, only the computers who are part of the VPN will be able to “view“the shared data.
